I woke up this morning to a reminder that May is National Masturbation Month (yes, it’s a day late, but never a dollar short!). Having just finished National Poetry Month in April, in which I participated in NaPoWriMo (essentially writing a new poem every day), my first thought was, “We need to do that with National Masturbation Month too!”

My second thought was, “No way I could pull that off.” Not that I couldn’t masturbate every day for the month of May (please…) but that I couldn’t make a blog and find a way to get people to jump on board. Posting poems every day is one thing. Posting stuff about masturbation is entirely different.

Then I posted a comment on Facebook and people were so enthusiastic that I couldn’t NOT try it out.

So, welcome to the first annual NaMa(Art)Mo. In which the goal is to masturbate every day and then document it in any way you like. Twitter. Haiku. Poetry. A single word. A single image. A drawing. A photograph.

Masturbation, in this case, means simply: The stimulation of yourself or another for sexual pleasure. You don’t have to orgasm. You can do the stimulating or be stimulated. You can be alone, with a partner, with a crowd, with your favorite toy or your favorite hand.

Can you take the challenge? Can you bring more pleasure to the world?

  2. Yum, I love this. Specifically, I love the spotlight on masturbation, and your open definition. This morning was like this: from soft sleep to warm arms, hugs to rubs we knotted the purple sheets. Cats jumped off, then back on, settling and resettling into the blankets our mushing bodies kept rearranging. Feeling my smiling face, opening eyes to your smiles — my favorite way to start a day. A big toast to Pleasure!

Good thing I just intuitively knew to celebrate on May 1 & 2, finding out about the month of celebration to keep up the momentum.

Are you doing this again this year? Please say yes!
